Hot UV bright stars in globular clusters
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have obtained medium-resolution spectra of seven UV-bright stars discovered on images of four southern globular clusters obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Effective temperatures, surface gravities and helium abundances are derived from LTE and non-LTE model atmosphere fits. Three of the stars have sdO spectra, including M4Y453 (Teff = 58800 K, log g = 5.15), NGC 6723-III60 (Teff= 40600 K, log g = 4.46) and NGC 6752-B2004 (Teff = 37000 K, log g = 5.25). All seven stars lie along either post-extended horizontal branch (EHB) or post-early AGB evolutionary tracks. The post-early AGB stars show solar helium abundances, while the post-EHB stars are helium deficient, similar to their EHB progenitors.

Globular clusters are ideal laboratories to study the evolution of low-mass stars. In this work we concentrate on three types of hot stars observed in globular clusters: horizontal branch stars, UV bright stars, and white dwarfs. After providing some historical background and information on gaps and blue tails we discuss extensively hot horizontal branch stars in metal-poor globular clusters, e...
متن کاملThe Uv Bright Star Zng 1 in M 5
We report the results of Hα imaging and UV spectroscopy with the Hubble Space Telescope of the hot post-AGB star ZNG 1 in M 5 and its suspected planetary nebula. Post asymptotic giant branch (PAGB) stars of population II are rare objects but are Rosetta stones for testing the theory of stellar evolution. Bona fide members of this class are the rare nuclei of halo planetary nebulae (PN) and PAGB...
متن کاملDetection and Photometry of Hot Horizontal Branch Stars in the Core of M321
We present the deepest near-UV image of M32 to date, which for the first time resolves hot horizontal branch (HB) stars in an elliptical galaxy. Given the near-solar metallicity of M32, much larger than that of globular clusters, the existence of an extended horizontal branch is a striking example of the second parameter effect, and, most importantly, provides direct evidence that hot HB stars ...
متن کاملUsing M32 to Study Rapid Phases of Stellar Evolution
The compact elliptical galaxy M32 offers a unique testing ground for theories of stellar evolution. Because of its proximity, solarblind UV observations can resolve the hot evolved stars in its center. Some of these late evolutionary phases are too rapid to study adequately in globular clusters, and their study in the Galactic field is often complicated by uncertainties in distance and reddenin...
متن کاملFar - Ultraviolet Imaging of the Globular Cluster Ngc 6681 with Wfpc
We have imaged the globular cluster NGC 6681 in the far-UV and visible with WFPC2 on the HST. Our far-UV images show a sparsely populated and fully resolved central region, and we detect 122 stars. The far-UV to visible color-magnitude diagram shows a well-defined horizontal branch with no evidence for hot, more evolved descendants. We find one hot horizontal-branch star significantly below the...
